Kathmandu, August 25- The organizing committee is pleased to announce that six journalists from various parts of Nepal have been selected for New Media Gufa 2013. A screening committee selected them out of over 100 nominations received online.

The journalists selected for this year’s edition of the New Media Gufa, an experiential news reporting event for journalists, are (with last names in alphabetical order):

Durga Adhikari, Radio Safalta, Kaski
Rabi Raj Baral, Annapurna Post, Kathmandu
Mahabir Bishwakarma, Jagaran Media Centre, Kathmandu
Bom Lal Giri, Ujyaalo 90 Network, Kathmandu
Gopal Jhapali, independent freelance journalist, Jhapa
Kabita Magar, Radio Pariwartan, Baglung

In addition, this year, veteran journalist Yubaraj Ghimire will be the atithi (guest) inside the newscave. He will live and work in seclusion with the other six participants.

The New Media Gufa will run from September 8 to 11, 2013. These journalists will be kept in seclusion in Hotel Mandap, Thamel for 72 hours from everything but computers or handheld devices with uninterrupted access to the Internet. Participants will be challenged to conceive news stories relevant to rural Nepal, and to report and write those stories following Gufa Style, a rigorous reporting and writing approach based on journalistic standards.

A team of researchers comprising Dr. Dharma Adhikari, the director of the event, and Chiranjibi Kafle, a professor from Tribhuvan University, will observe the participants at work, and record data for analysis.

The mission behind the closed door session is to find out the actual value of new media and their content in the development of news stories on issues that matter to the everyday lives of ordinary citizens.
This year, in addition to the core Gufa, participants from last year’s Gufa will conduct about a dozen sessions on various themes of journalism and new media during the four days. The events inside the “Gufa” will be live-cast online. Some sessions will be exclusively virtual, while others, though livecast online, will be open on site to a select number of audience.

“This is an effort to refresh our journalism, to examine our competencies and trends in digital journalism, and to create a space for all professionals to come together to celebrate our calling,” says Adhikari, the director of the event.

“There is so much happening in multi-media journalism and Nepal cannot be left apart”, says Rajneesh Bhandari, the coordinator of the event. A multi-media journalist, Bhandari says this year’s event will be more than just Gufa. It will feature topics such as data journalism, digital startups, and other current multimedia themes, including regional and international scenarios.

He says the event will serve to talk, discuss and critique the online mediascape in Nepal and plan for the future.
The event is organized by Media Foundation, in collaboration with Hotel Mandap.
